Flying Car in Development: Several Years in Development

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is no longer just a fantasy of the movies. Aero-Automotive Manufacturer Terrafugia is focused on combining driving, AI-technology, and flying in a new and practical way. The company’s newest goal is launching the TF-X™ – which is, essentially, a car that flies.

Terrafugia insists its TF-X™ project is focused on  clear goals that enhance safety, simplicity, and convenience of personal transportation. Through use of artificial intelligence and GPS technology, the vehicle would be capable of automatically avoiding other air traffic, bad weather, and restricted and tower-controlled airspace.

Worried About Accidents? Don’t Be.

The vehicle also has a full-vehicle parachute system which can be activated by the operator in an emergency if he/she believes the  TF-X™ is incapable of auto-landing.

Not A Pilot? Who Cares!

According to the company, one would not require a flying license to operate the vehicle. Learning how to safely operate its flying mechanism should take an average driver no more than five hours. It would also offer the flyer either “manual” or “automatic” modes between approved landing zones and airports.

Just Like A Car… But Much Cooler.

The  TF-X™ is capable of carrying four people, and will be able to fit into a standard construction single car garage. It will have a non-stop flight range of at least 500 miles and be able to take off vertically from a level clearing of at least 100ft in diameter. It will also be able to drive on roads and highways, providing true door-to-door convenience and automotive level of weather sensitivity.

Nitty Gritty Tech Details.

The vehicle is a fixed wing street-legal aircraft with electric ground drive and electric power assist on takeoff and landing. It will be able to recharge its batteries either from its engine or by plugging it into electric car charging stations. it will be capable of “auto-landing” at approved landing sites and with approved weather conditions. It also is capable of regulating sufficient energy on board to conduct last minute aborts as required.

When Can You Get It?

I know, your probably racing to get it already. Devleopment of the TF-X™ is expected to last another 8-12 years. You can register to be one of the first to own it, however. What are you waiting for?
