5 Useful Leadership Lessons From “Star Trek: Beyond”

If you haven’t already seen Star Trek: Beyond in theaters, it’s time to get a ticket. Not only does the latest installment in the Trek series stay true to the nostalgic feeling of the originals, but it also introduces some pretty fierce new characters that are hard not to love. It is currently certified as 84% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

For fun (why not?), we’ve put together some useful lessons that the film demonstrates about leadership & team building. We’ve used some recognizable quotes as easy references.

Captain Kirk to Commander Spock: ‘We make a good team.’

It’s crucial to recognize key players. A team is only as strong as its people, and a trait of good leadership is recognizing the unique & valuable skills each person brings to the table. Kirk is able to recognize his special bond with Spock and their ability to accomplish the impossible together, making them an invaluable combo.

Lieutenant Uhura: ‘Our captain will come for us. Mercy will be the last thing on his mind.’

For a team’s bond to be strong, trust is invaluable. Experienced leaders know this, and they invest time to develop trust between co-workers. Uhura believes in Kirk’s devotion to his crew and never doubts he will make a rescue attempt to free them.

Captain Kirk: ‘The farther we go [in space], the more I find myself wondering what it is we are trying to accomplish. But if the universe it truly endless, then we are not striving for something forever out of reach.’

On your darkest days, you need to keep believing. Even the most successful leaders have moments of doubt – when they lose sight of their goals and question their motives. In these moments, it’s important to think back to why you started. Keep going, you’ll get there.

Be proud of how far you have come. Don’t be afraid to defend it. The path to executive leadership is not without difficulty. Once you get to where you need to be, fight for your seat at the table (or in Kirk’s case, the Captain’s Chair).
